Recommendation from Health Visitor Joan Wood
In health visiting over the last six years I have found that the repercussions of sleep deprivation in both children and adults are some of the most common and worrying aspects of my work. Sleep problems have long been recognised as a major cause of unwanted disruptions to family dynamics. The frustrating thing about these problems is that most can be either prevented or cured.
In response to an identified local need, two years ago I helped to set up a sleep clinic for parents. This necessarily required some research into the enormous variety of publications then available on this subject.
This much-needed new self-help guide fills the gap between the more lengthy books, which can sometimes be confusing, and brief leaflets which may not be detailed or comprehensive enough to inspire confidence amongst parents.
I am particularly impressed with how various different points of view on sleep-related issues are covered, allowing parents to make individual and appropriate choices. The presentation is very clear and the 'signed agreement' format in Section 5 will be particularly useful in reinforcing parental commitment to carry out this programme.
Although this guide is obviously useful for those parents already much in need of sleep, I would also recommend it to new parents who, forewarned and forearmed, will prevent problems occurring and hence look forward to many sleep-filled nights.
