Vaccination
Studer, Hans-Peter: Vaccination - A Guide for Making Better Decisions. Floris Books, 15 Harrison Gardens, Edinburgh EH11 1SH, Scotland 2004 (£6.99)
For most vaccinations offered in the UK, the time to decide whether or not to vaccinate your child has to be taken before the birth. Parents are encouraged to give baby a vitamin K injection at birth and then book in for the five-in-one Pediacell jab (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, haemophilus influenza type B (Hib) and polio) when baby is between one and two months old. They then have just over a year to make the second big decision - whether or not to give baby the controversial MMR (measles, mumps, rubella (German measles) triple jab.
Hans-Peter starts by discussing the two basic questions which guide every parent’s decision-making process:
The issues include: Are vaccinations the best way of preventing illness? At what age and how often should vaccinations be given? How safe are the additives put into vaccines? Are the true risks of damage from vaccinations known?
Finally, he takes each vaccination recommended under the UK Childhood Vaccination Schedule 2004. Based on his experience as a doctor and exhaustive research into the findings of many studies, he describes:
As Hans-Peter stresses, this book "aims to help you - in consultation with your doctor - to make the right choice for you and your children, but it cannot (and should not) make the decision for you, for this is ultimately up to you". We cannot recommend it highly enough.
