A message from the author, Angela Henderson

Dear Parents
My main message to you can be summed up in one sentence:

WARNING: Sleep deprivation can endanger your health and your family relationships.

In the testimonials section of this web site, you can read extracts from the letters of parents who reached ill health, marriage breakdown and complete desperation as a result of sleep deprivation caused by their baby's sleep patterns. I wrote this guide because I experienced at first hand the misery of being sleep deprived with my first baby and I wanted other people to avoid having to go through it.

If you have a newborn baby or are expecting a child - Forewarned is forearmed! Some midwives and antenatal teachers are now recommending this guide to all their parents so that good sleeping habits can be developed from the start. Newborns need to feed regularly day and night so of course there is some natural sleep disruption in the early weeks. But with the help of this guide this can be kept to a minimum and if problems do start to develop you will immediately know what to do.

If you already have babies over 6 months with sleep problems - The sooner you can get this guide, the better, as the longer problems are allowed to continue the harder they are to put right. By 7 months, if there are no obvious medical or other unusual problems, your baby can be weaned off night feeding and be sleeping through the night in often just a few days.

I do not claim to have invented the techniques described within the guide - but what is unique is that I have condensed down the established knowledge in the field into a step-by-step format that even the tiredest parent can read and use! I am proud to say that in the 6 years since its first publication, The Good Sleep Guide has become widely regarded as the best guide of its kind. It has already helped literally thousands of parents and is now regularly used and recommended by over 1500 health visitors in the UK, as well as by the charity Crysis. At a low price not much more than the cost of a pack of baby-wipes, it is accessible to all and includes sections on key issues such as bed-sharing, weaning, coping with crying and the role of diet in baby sleep patterns.

Replying to letters - I am sorry that, due to having two children myself as well as running ABC Health Guides, I cannot reply individually to e-mails and letters asking for advice, although, once you have read the guide, I am happy to reply to short e-mails requesting clarification if someone is experiencing particular problems. Most people find that the guide is so clear that they do not need further advice, but if you do, the best person to ask is your health visitor. There is a Help Section in the guide which lists other telephone numbers to call.

New babies should be a source of joy to their families. I hope that with the help of this guide you will gain the energy to fully enjoy this precious time.

Best wishes
Angela Henderson

PS If you feel resistant to following advice on this subject - Perhaps you have just come to live with getting up at all hours of the night, not sleeping with your partner any more, or comfort-feeding through the night with a baby who is well over weaning age. Of course it is hard as parents to realise that we may have done things unnecessarily, and to accept advice from a book, or from someone else who we think 'knows better' than us. However, for the sake of your family, please do give this guide a chance. Huge improvements to your lives could be gained by making really quite small changes to your baby's routine, even if there is some small short-term 'pain' to go through whilst bad habits are being broken.
